RZA and Singer Bjork Have Unreleased Songs Together

RZA might be a living emblem of rap’s golden era, but he’s never had issues branching out to other genres. That point was made abundantly clear when he formed the Banks & Steelz duo with Interpol lead singer Paul Banks, and once again when renowned Icelandic singer Björk revealed that she and the Wu-Tang Clan member actually have some unreleased songs in the vaults.

Speaking with the folks at Fact Magazine, Björk, who’s released her ninth studio album, titled Utopia, last week, spoke on her love of Wu-Tang Clan and her history making music with RZA. Apparently, the idea to collab with RZA came from the acclaimed singer’s frustration with her own music-producing process while working on her Homogenic album 20 years ago.

“I think what happened was…I wanted these kinda Icelandic, volcanic beats, and I was kind of struggling with it,” she says in the new interview. “I had done beats on my albums, but it takes me a long time to make them. And sometimes I get impatient and I want other people to do it, so I sit there and describe to them what I want them to do. So, I was in Spain, and Wu-Tang Clan were supposed to come to Spain. RZA was supposed to come. But then months passed. Then the album got finished and I delivered it. Then RZA was like, ‘I’m ready! Shall I come to Spain?’”

RZA, who produced a large portion of Wu-Tang Clan’s The Saga Continues, didn’t end up traveling to Spain, but eventually, Björk instead made her way to New York City, where they collabed for the first time. The songs have never seen the light of day.

“Sometimes when you do things and you don’t plan them it’s magic,” she says. “And I really think what we made was magic. But I think because it wasn’t part of the whole Homogenic thing and it wasn’t part of what Wu-Tang were doing at the time, it was better as an idea, if that makes any sense?”

We haven’t heard their collabs, but maybe we will in the future? Who knows, but we’re willing to bet the sound would be more than a little interesting.
