Meek Mill might be spending his Thanksgiving locked up in prison for violating his probation. But he made sure to still do his part for the people in need in his hometown of Philadelphia by still going forward with his annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway.

Yesterday (Nov. 22), hundreds of families gathered in the city for Meek’s fifth-annual turkey event, according to USA Today, which was sponsored by Meek’s Dreamchasers label, Roc Nation and the local non-profit anti-poverty group, Unity in the Community. In all, 1,000 turkeys were passed out in poor neighborhoods.

“I take my hat off to Meek Mill,” said Unity in the Community founder Anton Moore. “Now all these families have Thanksgiving (meals) they might not have had if he didn’t give out those turkeys.”

Despite his circumstances, the Dreamchasers rapper seems to be in high spirits. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick recently talked to Meek and relayed a positive message from the imprisoned MC. “Spoke to Meek Mill & he wanted ppl to know regardless of his unjust situation, he’s in good spirits & humbled by the support the people have shown him,” Colin tweeted. “We’ll continue to fight against the harsh sentencing practices that have affected Meek & millions of other POC for generations.”

Meek’s lawyers are puling out all the stops in order to try to get the rapper, who was sentenced to two to four years in prison, out of his current situation. Their most recent tactic has been to use the judge’s past against her.
