As Colin Kaepernick continues his fight against the injustices people of color face in the U.S., the NFL quarterback revealed he spoke with Meek Mill, who is currently behind bars.

On Monday afternoon (Nov. 20), Kaepernick said the Wins & Losses rapper is in good spirits and delivered a message from the Philadelphia artist. “Spoke to Meek Mill & he wanted ppl to know regardless of his unjust situation, he’s in good spirits & humbled by the support the people have shown him,” he tweeted. “We’ll continue to fight against the harsh sentencing practices that have affected Meek & millions of other POC for generations.”

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is the latest celebrity to come out against the rapper’s two to four-year sentencing. Last week, JAY-Z penned a letter for the New York Times, slamming the criminal justice system. “What’s happening to Meek Mill is just one example of how our criminal justice system entraps and harasses hundreds of thousands of black people every day,” the rapper wrote.

“I saw this up close when I was growing up in Brooklyn during the 1970s and 1980s,” he continued. “Instead of a second chance, probation ends up being a land mine, with a random misstep bringing consequences greater than the crime. A person on probation can end up in jail over a technical violation like missing a curfew.”

While Meek continues to sit behind bars, the rapper recently notched a minor victory—being moved from solitary confinement to general population, per his request. The rapper and his team are now fighting for a bail hearing.
